Friday, 4/17
Hello parents!
Happy Friday! Just a quick reminder that there will be no new lessons on Fridays per the directive from the district. Please use this day to catch up on any lessons from the week you may have missed, or to review any content. As always, please reach out to us today if we can be of any assistance. We are here to help in any way.
However, if you are looking for other (optional) activities for your child to do, some suggestions you might consider would be: reviewing addition / subtraction facts within 20 (from memory), practicing three digit addition/subtraction, or read for enjoyment.
Once again, thank you for all you do! We hope you have a restful weekend.
Thursday 4/16
Please see today's email, or the Class Dojo post for the link to the TEAMS meeting today at 10:00. After you click the link you will be asked if you want to download the Teams app, or join on the Web. (If you already have the Teams app, it will open automatically). From what I’ve heard, it is easier to download the app, rather than to join on the web. Looking forward to seeing your kids today!
Also just a reminder that per CCSD, our new lessons will only be sent out Monday-Thursday. Friday is used to catch up, or to review the work from the week. We will continue to be available to help with any questions or concerns as usual on Fridays. Also, please note that students should not spend more than one hour per day on lessons. Please feel free to stop after one hour, even if your child has not finished the assignments. They can use Fridays to complete unfinished work. We do not want to overwhelm them (or you). We thank you for all you are doing!!!

Tell us in a few sentences.
Send your response to the Dojo assignment folder “Thursday 4/16 Newsela Jimmy Carter”.
Writing: Use MyOn (found in Clever, or Myon.com) to research and find more information about your topic. See if you can learn new facts about your topic to add to your introduction from Wednesday, or to your writing plan in general.

Friday (4/3)
Just a reminder that today at 10:00 we will email the students an invitation for our weekly Zoom meeting. Next week is spring break, so we will not be posting assignments. Hope your kids (and you, too!) can take a break from school work and have some fun.
MATH: I CAN...solve one-step word problems within 100 with the start unknown. I can solve addition and subtraction fact problems within 20 fluently.
Directions: Watch the video of your teacher presenting the word problem, focusing on the strategies your teacher uses to solve the problem. http://youtu.be/CoaS2QvC588?hd=1
Upload your answer to Dojo assignment: “Word Problem 4/3”.
Next, play the math game to practice math fact fluency with addition and subtraction.
Assignment: https://www.abcya.com/games/math_facts_game
This game has 3 levels. Level 1 uses lower numbers and it increases in difficulty. Have your child begin on level 1. If it is too easy for them, move up a level until they are being challenged. Make sure your child is focused on addition or subtraction facts first. In their free time, they may practice multiplication and division facts if you feel they are ready. (This is NOT a required skill for 2nd grade, but many students express interest in learning multiplication and division.)
READING: I CAN...identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.
Directions: Go to Clever.com and click on the Myon application. Once in Myon, go to “My Projects” and work on the “Identifying the Main Purpose” assignment. The book you will read is called Martin Luther King Jr.

WRITING: I CAN share my writing with an audience.
Directions: Have a writing celebration! 😊 Have a special snack to celebrate your hard work!
Assignment: Share your imaginative writing piece with your audience at home. Next, upload your writing to Dojo in assignment folder called: “Imaginative Narrative”. We are so excited to see your stories!!
*Parents: Sometimes it can be hard for us to read the writing uploads because of the blurriness of the photo. One suggestion is to use the “Microsoft Office Lens” app (free). SEE INFO BELOW.
Or, if you prefer, another option would be to scan and send their writing to us. Please let us know if you need anything!
Have a great spring break and stay well!

Friday (3/27)
We are looking forward to our Zoom session today at 10:00! We will send the invitation via email at 10:00. We are so excited to see our Baker Bears!!!! We will plan on hosting these sessions each Friday at 10:00. Also, we will be posting Monday messages to Class Dojo, as well as direct instruction videos throughout the week.
Also, it seems that many students are having trouble uploading photos of assignments to their Class Dojo “portfolio”. The students need to be logged in on Dojo as a “student”. It could be that they are logged in under your “parent” account, and that is why you might not see the “portfolio” tab. In the beginning of the year we sent home each students’ unique QR code, but understandably, you may not still have that. So, I will be emailing out your child’s QR code so that they can upload their assignments to their Class Dojo “portfolio”. Some of you have been sending photos to us as a Dojo “message”, and that is fine too, but if possible, please do try posting in their “portfolio”. This way, their assignments are all in one place, and both Mrs. F and I can see them. Personal student account QR codes will be sent out later today, with directions included.
Here are the lessons of the day:
MATH: I CAN explore with 2 and 3D shapes.
Directions: Free Choice Friday!!!
Assignment: Chose from any of the following interactive shape games to play:
Kangaroo Hop: https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_Kangaroo_Hop.html
Tanagrams: https://www.mathplayground.com/tangrams.html
Shape Inlay: https://www.mathplayground.com/shape_inlay.html
Reflection Painter: https://www.mathplayground.com/reflection_painter.html
READING: I CAN identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text
Directions: Free Choice! Pick a book of your choice to read for your enjoyment! Share a picture to your Class Dojo Portfolio! 😊
WRITING: I CAN write the events of my imaginative narrative.
Directions: Watch video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhm3tK41uWQ
Assignment: After watching the video, draft the events of your imaginative narrative.
Thursday (3/26)
Just a reminder that Mrs. Frankland and I will host a Zoom session for students at 10:00 am tomorrow. Be on the lookout for the email invitation which will be sent out at 10:00. Please tell your child to feel free to have a book, assignment, project, or story to share, if they wish. We will try something new so that we can eliminate background noise and speak one person at a time: Each person will be on “mute” when they enter the session, then if they have something to say, they can raise their hand. When called on, they will press “unmute”. This way everyone can have a chance to share. We will try this method and see how it goes! Can’t wait to “see” everybody tomorrow! (If your child can’t make it, please email us to let us know if they’d like a phone call. Please include the best time and phone number to reach them.) 😊
Here are today’s lessons:
MATH: I CAN... sort two and three-dimensional shapes into categories.

Info from our Art teacher, Mrs. McDowell:
Good morning Baker parents,
Starting today I will be posting weekly art activities every Tuesday morning via Flipgrid. I am sure your child’s homeroom teacher has relayed to you that each specialist teacher will have a different day of the week. I will provide a quick video but also will attach a GoogleDoc to provide written details and visuals for the activity. I will try my best to create activities that involve only simple drawing/coloring tools and/or materials that can be found around the house. I would love to see what your child creates so please encourage them to leave a video response with their art! There is no deadline to these art activities whatsoever so even if it is a work in progress I’d love to see.
This week’s activity is a Color Wheel Collage- you will need white paper, pencil, old magazines, scissors, and glue.
